Dichotomy of a Writer: Part Two

September 9, 2016

For my semester abroad, I lived in Ireland with twenty students in one house. We did everything together, and we had to learn to live “by the seat of our pants” because we rarely knew our schedule more than two weeks in advance. For the most part, I thrived on this pace, because I’m what … More Dichotomy of a Writer: Part Two

Ah coffee, the weary world rejoices. And @bookloverscoffee is delicious. NaNoWriMo is over, and I took the week off. But I’m about to go have a Christmas-y writing retreat with two of my besties! Much coffee shall be had. By me…that is. I somehow collect friends who don’t like coffee. …More for me! 😏😎 What are /your/ feelings on coffee? Challenges: #StoriesWithStephDec19 – The Weary World Rejoices: book + coffee (In’l Volunteer Day) #ChristmasWithPugs19 – Curly tails: cinnamon roll characters – Beck. 😊 #BookBookOwlChristmas – Gingerbread House (books + snacks) – Mmmm coffee. #QuestForCamelotDec19 – Ruber’s Griffin: books that deal with Abuse – the abuse in this book is so sad, and @paperfury handles it so well. #ReadingAdventuresDec19 – Spiked Eggnog: read to savor – I read this book in a day, but someday I’ll read it with more savor and turn the spine a rainbow with page flags. … … … #AThousandPerfectNotes #BookLoversCoffee #CGDrews
“Where there's life there's hope.” It’s my dad’s birthday, and I wish I could invite you all over for tea and cookies to celebrate the man who raised me telling stories of princesses and hobbits and portals to other worlds, who threw me Lord of the Rings birthday parties, and who lets me pass notes with him bullet-pointing the best ways to create an evil cabal …for book research. Alas, I can only tempt you with these chocolatey cookies. How do you celebrate birthdays? Challenges: #StoriesWithStephDec19 – Santa’s Cookies: book + snack (Nat’l Cookie Day) – These are Tate’s gluten free double chocolate chip cookies. #WildAdventuresDec19 – Crooked Kingdom: tore you apart – Thorin 😭 #ChristmasWithPugs19 – Hammy: thief – Bilbo! #AllTheBooksDec19 – Classics #ReadGushDec19 – Top 3 Inspiring Bookstagrammers – Umm, only three??? Today I’m sending love to @townsendtales + @hannasandvig + @vanessarasanenauthor #ReadingAdventuresDec19 – Angels on High: winged character - ….the eagles 😜 … … … #TheHobbit #JRRTolkien #TheLordOfTheRings
It’s Giving Tuesday! After a long weekend of shopping – whether for ourselves or for people in our life we’re going to make smile, I love that we have at least this day to focus on giving to greater causes. Especially on days like this where there are often matching gifts involved, a little goes a long way. But since the things I give to aren’t booksta-things, here’s a continued look on bookish gifts. I don’t often receive books as presents because people usually think I might already have them or think I already have too many. 😏 But my mom got me Arcanum Unbounded for Christmas two years ago. She actually hid it so well, she couldn’t find it, and we found it under a bed weeks later. 😄 What’s your favorite book you’ve been gifted? Challenges: #StoriesWithStephDec19 – Gold, Frankincense, Myrrh: book gifted to you (Giving Tuesday) #WildAdventuresDec19 – Daughter of the Siren Queen: ocean adventures – I’m drawing from @nadinebrandes’s A Time to Speak here. I just love Solomon charging after the boat as it sails away. Here’s to Antarctic ocean adventures! #ChristmasWithPugs19 – Wendy: sweet character with a mischievous side – Shallan. She may look artsy and quiet, but she’s got a witty side. #MoodReadersDec19 – Don’t be a Scrooge #givingtuesday #AllTheBooksDec19 – Books on my wishlist – Arcanum was a book on my wishlist! *thanks mom* I’m still building out my Sanderson hardcover collection. And I don’t have any copies of Elantris or the White Sands graphic novels. #QuestForCamelotDec19 – Kayley + Garrett: your first OTP – Parvin + Solomon! I didn’t know what “OTP” was until about the time I was reading the Out of Time series. #ReadGushDec19 – Top 3 Bookish Items – Magnetic Bookmarks! Book Cozies! Delicious Fandom Candles or Mugs... though I use mugs more actually. … … … #BrandonSanderson #LiveTheCozyLife #NadineBrandes
And that’s a wrap on the crazy shopping long-weekend of the year. How’d you do? Gift-giving is a weakness of mine. I love thinking through what’s special to my family and friends, and I love supporting small businesses, and I love just having the excuse to lavish love in the form of gifts. So, how’d I do this weekend? From my wallet’s perspective, it definitely could have been worse, but it also could have been better… In other news, I also finished The Toll this weekend!! Have you read it yet? Tell me what you thought. Challenges: #StoriesWithStephDec19 – Tinsel + Twine: holiday shopping (Cyber Monday) #WildAdventuresDec19 – The Queen of Nothing: series conclusion that killed you – I thought The Toll conclusion might kill me, but I actually survived this one. Shusterman did a nice job pulling it all together at the end. #ChristmasWithPugs19 – Belly: bossy character – Seriously, everyone in this book. #MoodReadersDec19 – Shop Small #cybermonday – I did! Cyber and in person. #BookBookOwlChristmas – 2 Turtle Doves (Duology) – Tee hee, @ruthanneburrell remember that time you thought this was a duology? #BookishConLifeDec19 – Drink your ovaltine #mugmonday (yes, yes it is a mug in the bag) #ReadGushDec19 – Top 3 Bookish Shops You Found in 2019 - @pixie_dust_official @crabapplebooks and maybe Shelflove or TheBookishBox? I honestly don’t try to find too many new shops, because my $$ can only flow to so many, and I like to support the ones I already know. #ReadingAdventuresDec19 – Follow the Star: bestseller #AllTheBooksDec19 – Books + Lights … … … #TheToll #NealShusterman #CoverLove
How do you prepare for the holidays? I love Christmas and the turn of the year, but it’s easy to get caught up in the craziness of the season. Work/school, friends/family, parties, shopping, …rest? We are not built to go-go-go. We need a rhythm of joy and peace, high energy and low energy. That’s why one of my favorite things about the season is the mindfulness of Advent. This Sunday was the first candle, Hope. “Hope” is having a plan. (Hopelessness is the feeling of “there is no plan that could fix this.”) So, while I ponder my hopes for this season – emotional, spiritual, physical, relational – I thought it also appropriate to address the hope for my TBR. 😊 Operation TBR: Read ALL the Books. Amendment: Balance is a good thing. Don’t let ALL the Books get in the way of my other hopes for the season. (You can see I’m already doing that, because I’m a day belated in posting.) What are you hoping for this season? Challenges: #StoriesWithStephDec19 – Hope of the Advent: prepping for the season #tbr (Advent Begins) #BookBookOwlChristmas – O Christmas Tree (Decorations) December TBR – #WildAdventuresDec19 #ChristmasWithPugs19 #MoodReadersDec19 #BerryEnchantressDec19 #AllTheBooksDec19 #BookishConLifeDec19 #QuestForCamelotDec19 #ReadGushDec19 #ReadingAdventuresDec19 … … … #Advent #Hope #AmReading
I won NaNoWriMo! And I read more books than I bought in November, so that’s a plus. Grateful for library audiobooks to help me through! How was your November reading? THE WRAP-UP: #TheToll – Hawke + I just finished The Toll. We’re still blinking the stars out of our eyes. #TheBurningWhite – I finished the EPIC Lightbringer series with my epic @CreateExploreRead bookstagram bookmark! #MuseOfNightmares – Sarai + I learned more about the world of Weep and just want to give Minya a great big hug. #WeHuntTheFlame – Aladdin + I went on an interesting quest with a huntress and an assassin. #SkyWithoutStars – John Darling + I zipped to the future where we got to see Les Mis in space. #TheMagiciansNephew – Mr. Pan + I explored the Wood Between the Worlds to the voice of Kenneth Branagh, and Peter may have stayed and become the first Narnia King (and sent the cabby to Neverland in his stead). #TheLionTheWitchAndTheWardrobe – Lucy + I had tea with Mr. Tumnus and hugged Aslan’s mane and watched spring return to Narnia. #TheHorseAndHisBoy – Susan + I escaped the political schemes of wicked men and rolled in the grass with Bree and walked through a dark wood with Aslan by our side. #PrinceCaspian – Peter + I explored the ruins of Cair Paravel and helped Reepicheep & Co. oust the invaders! #HowlsMovingCastle – Wendy + I discovered all is not what it seems with this Wizard “Howell” and must promptly go visit Wales. #NewSpring – Ana + I revisited the world of the Wheel of Time and enjoyed watching little Moiraine and Siuan figure out this Lan guy. #NinthHouse – I took myself to the occult world of Yale via my library audiobook, and it was what I expected it to be with a dash of meh. Challenges: #StoriesWithStephNov19 – NaNoWriMo (50k): reading | writing wrap-up #SaraEllaMermaid – November Wrap-up + Endings that give hope – THE BURNING WHITE #WildAdventuresNov19 – November wrap up #ReadGushNov19 – Wrap Up #TheSwanPrincessNov19 – November wrap up #AmpersandNov19 – Wrap-up #BookishConLifeNov19 – Site B wrap up #BookQueensNov19 – November Wrap Up #AllTheBooksNov19 – November Wrap Up #BookRavensNov19 – Wrap-up #NarnianNovember – No Need to Say Goodbye: wrap up … … …

“Do not dare not to dare.” Ahhh I love this story. I’ve been reading through the Chronicles of Narnia this month on audiobook and loving it. The Horse and His Boy is still my favorite so far. It has all the elements of a great story – hero’s journey, political schemes, fantastical creatures and adventure, a hint of romance, and so many deep truths. And, of course, I’m a sucker for storylines colliding and worlds expanding. I love getting to follow Shasta and Bree on an adventure that also intersects with the Pevensies and Narnia in a new way. I’m currently waiting for Voyage of the Dawn Treader’s digital audiobook to come in at my library. Until then… NaNoWriMo, last day! How are you doing? I’ll check in tonight. Challenges: #StoriesWithStephNov19 – Emotional Support: shoutout your bookish | writing community #ForNarniaReadathon – I’ve been reading *and* taking pictures with each book! …Somehow I’ve neglected posting them. Oops… I’ll post the others soon. #SaraEllaMermaid – Thanksgiving: books that changed you – I’ve grown up with the Narnia stories, and they’ve definitely helped shape my worldview. #BHPFallFictionChallenge – Thanksgiving Day – Between Thanksgiving and NaNoWriMo, I fell off the booksta-map these last few days. Happy Belated Thanksgiving! #WildAdventuresNov19 – Neverland: world you wish was real – Narnia! #MoodReadersNov19 – Give Thanks – Grateful for you. #AllTheBooksNov19 – Books I’m Thankful For #NarnianNovember – Happy Thanksgiving! … … … #TheChroniclesOfNarnia #TheHorseAndHisBoy #CSLewis
